ANALYSIS
Schafer's long odds of making the Orioles' Opening Day roster have officially come to an end, but it looks like the non-roster invitee will remain with the organization. Expect him to open the season at Triple-A Norfolk as he awaits an opportunity for a big-league promotion.

Schafer offers a capable glove in the outfield, but he's made a minimal impact in the majors and offers little power or speed for fantasy purposes. He does make contact and draws walks, so he'll likely continue to add depth at Triple-A.
Schafer was given another chance to be the fourth outfielder for the Brewers at the beginning of the season, but was sent back to Triple-A Colorado Springs after hitting only .191 for the first couple months of the season. He spent some time between the two clubs the rest of the year, but still only managed a .292 OBP with Colorado Springs and a .299 OBP with Milwaukee with little power. Schafer inked a minor league deal with Washington in spring training and will attend major league camp as a non-roster invitee. He will have a tough time cracking the roster with Michael Taylor possibly filling the fourth outfielder role to start the season.
Schafer opened last season as the Brewers’ top reserve outfielder, but he struggled mightily with the bat and was eventually replaced by in-season acquisition Gerardo Parra. While he plays good defense and can cover center field, Schafer's .209 career average at the big-league level suggests he is likely no better than a fourth outfielder. With Parra under contract for 2015, Schafer is likely set to open the season with Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Schafer started 69 games for the Brewers in 2013, but really struggled to hit for both average and power. Schafer has good speed and can play center field, but his offensive shortcomings limit his fantasy value, and will also keep him in a reserve role despite the trade of Norichika Aoki. Expect Schafer to serve as the top outfielder off the bench in 2014.
Schafer put together a strong season both offensively and defensively in his first go-around with Triple-A Nashville last season, racking up 43 extra-base hits (23 doubles, nine triples, and a career-high 11 homers) and making just three errors in 118 games in center field. He also hit .304 in a late-season stint with the big club, which convinced the club to jettison Nyjer Morgan this offseason and head into next season with Schafer positioned as the club's fourth outfielder.
Schafer split 2011 between Double-A Huntsville and Triple-A Nashville. He finished the season in Nashville where he hit .331/.401/.521 while playing above average defense in center. Nobody believes that he'll hit like that in the majors, but the Brewers believe that his defense is major league ready and would have no problems putting him in the major league lineup. Nyjer Morgan is currently holding down that spot in Milwaukee, but Schafer could make the team as a fifth outfielder.
Schafer hit .313/.369/.446 at High-A Brevard County in 2009 and impressed Milwaukee scouts. He'll need to improve his walk rate and become a more efficient base stealer, but his ability to play center field will keep him on a path to Milwaukee. The Brewers' future in center field is unclear and Schafer may challenge for that spot by 2011, but next season he'll start at Double-A Huntsville.
