Moya signed a one-year contract with the Chunichi Dragons of the Nippon Professional Baseball League in Japan, Emily Waldon of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Moya spent the entire 2017 season in the minor leagues within the Detroit organization, slashing just .166/.222/.344 during 46 games in Triple-A. He played in 31 big-league games in 2016, but wasn't able to make enough of an impression to warrant any more playing time in the majors.

Moya is listed at 6-foot-6, 220 pounds, but if you see him in person, both of those measurements feel understated. He is big in stature and big in power and has hit 35, 20, and 25 homers over the past three seasons. Unfortunately, he is also big on impatience, as he is aggressive at the plate and strikes out a ton. In Triple-A Toledo, he struck out 27 percent of the time in 2016. In the 133 plate appearances he has had at the big league level, he has struck out in 38 percent. At 25, he still has time for improvement, so he could go back to Triple-A for more seasoning. He has to play a corner outfield spot or serve at DH, but of course, Justin Upton, J.D. Martinez, and Victor Martinez block all three of those spots with the big club. If the younger Martinez is traded, then Moya becomes a high-risk chase of power upside.
Moya failed to build on his breakout 2014 season last season. He actually scuffled to the tune of a .240/.283/.420 slash line with 20 home runs and 74 RBI with Triple-A Toledo in 2015 after ringing up a .276/.306/.555 slash with 35 home runs and 105 RBI in Double-A the year before. He's a power lefty bat who's arguably the Tigers' best prospect, but he's a strikeout machine. Moya whiffed 162 times in 500 at-bats in Triple-A in 2015 and he needs to prove he can lay off breaking balls to become a regular in Detroit.
The Tigers have been enamored by Moya’s power potential since signing the international free agent as a teenager back in 2008. The big-bodied (6-6, 230) outfielder finally fulfilled that potential last season, hitting .276 with 25 homers and 105 RBI en route to Eastern League MVP honors. While the power is clearly legit, Moya still struggles with his plate discipline. His swing is often long and loopy, which resulted in 161 strikeouts in 515 at-bats, and he also doesn’t draw many walks (23). On the defensive side of the ball, Moya is considered a decent corner outfield option, although he may be better suited for first base long-term. The Tigers are in need of a left-handed bat to platoon with Rajai Davis, and the team intends to give Moya a legit look for the gig, but he’s probably a notch behind Tyler Collins in the position battle heading into spring training. With no Triple-A experience yet, Moya is probably best served spending the majority of the year in Toledo refining his approach at the plate, but he’ll definitely be on the Tigers’ radar if the need arises.
Back from Tommy John surgery, Moya flashed growth during his first stint in High-A Lakeland. The 22-year-old hit .225/.296/.433 with 12 homers and 55 RBI in 365 at-bats. His primary issue, like many young players, is plate discipline, as Moya racked up 106 strikeouts and managed just 12 walks. Despite the apparent flaws in his game, Detroit remains intrigued by the corner outfield prospect. At 6-foot-7, 235 pounds, Moya is a mountain of a man who possesses decent athleticism. His size and strength alone portends to an eventual surge in power, and while he has unleashed mammoth shots in practice settings, Moya still hasn’t developed to the point where he’s been a consistent threat in game situations. While the ceiling is high here, Moya has to make significant strides in his approach at the plate and general feel for the game before receiving a legit look from the Tigers. A strong showing at Double-A Erie in 2014 could put him on fantasy radars.
