Patterson hasn't been a high-profile prospect like others in the Rockies' system, but he continued to put up solid numbers in his first season at Triple-A. While he was in Albuquerque, the 25-year-old bashed 45 extra-base hits (including 14 home runs) to boost his slash line to .293/.376/.480. Although his strikeout rate sat at a terribly high 23.8 percent, he managed to walk in nearly 10 percent of his at-bats while getting hit by 13 pitches. All this success punched him a ticket for Denver as a September callup, and although he was limited in his playing time, the Alabama-native put up a strong 8-for-19 performance during his first cup of coffee with the Rockies. The outfield is a logjam now that top prospects David Dahl and Raimel Tapia are competing for major league playing time, and the addition of Ian Desmond gives the Rockies plenty of veteran options to cover first base as well.
Patterson may be a bit of an afterthought in a loaded Rockies farm system, but his numbers last season are hard to ignore. A fourth-round pick out of South Alabama in 2013, Patterson’s above-average combination of speed and power has been evident throughout his rise up the organizational ranks. He was caught on 10 of his 28 stolen base attempts, so he probably is not a realistic 20/20 threat in the majors. However, if everything clicks he could be a 20-homer, 10-steal guy in his prime years, especially if he gets to play half his games in Coors Field. Some scouts question whether his hit tool will play against upper-echelon pitching, but if he hits .265 or better, there is a chance he can make it as an everyday player. He could get a shot at contributing in September.
