The time to trade Matias in a dynasty league was in late June, when he was slugging .640 with 24 HR in just 59 games -- essentially pacing all of affiliated baseball in power production. Strikeouts were an issue at that point (37.0 K%), but he was just 19 years old, so that could be pushed to the side, given all those home runs. He hit .213 with just seven HR over his next 35 games and a mid-August thumb injury cut his season short. Matias was on pace to hit 50-plus HR, but when his power production dipped, his significant warts began to dominate the discussion. A 34.8 K% and 6.4 BB% against Low-A pitching is difficult to reconcile. Joey Gallo also toured the Sally League as a 19-year-old in 2013, and while he struck out slightly more (37.0 K%) than Matias, he was even more prodigious (163 wRC+, .365 ISO vs. 138 wRC+, .320 ISO) and he walked quite a bit more (10.8 BB%). Gallo is the ceiling for Matias -- the floor is he never makes the majors.
In a system lacking in toolsy, high-pedigree position players, Matias is an outlier. One of the top prizes in the 2015 international signing class, Matias signed with the Royals for a $2.25 million bonus and made his stateside debut in 2016. While he currently has the speed for center field, his size (6-foot-3, 200 pounds and growing), plus power and plus arm make him an obvious long-term fit in right field. He tied for the Arizona League lead with eight home runs -- an impressive feat for a 17-year-old slugger. The power is clearly real, and he can already hit balls out to all fields. There are some obvious flaws in his game, but it's so early in the developmental process that it's hard to nitpick too much. He posted a 36.9 percent strikeout rate but also walked 11.1 percent of the time, which is rare for any 17-year-old. Matias is forever away, and there is plenty of risk, but he has a higher ceiling than any hitting prospect in the Royals' system.
