Dealt loss in long relief
Allen (0-1) was the pitcher of record in Thursday's 5-0 loss to the Giants, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out three over 4.2 innings of relief.
ANALYSIS
Allen, who had his contract selected from Triple-A Reno on Wednesday, was pressed into extended action Thursday after starter Ryne Nelson was pulled after getting struck in the elbow by a line drive in the second inning. The southpaw came on in the third inning and allowed three hits and his lone run in that frame, but he settled in thereafter, making ample use of a changeup that had been an effective offering for him at Triple-A prior to his call-up, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com. Allen kept Arizona in the game before departing with two outs in the seventh and the Giants clinging to a one-run lead. Nelson may have avoided serious injury -- X-rays came back negative -- but the club will see how he responds Friday before making any decisions. If Nelson is unable to make his next start during next week's series in St. Louis, Allen is a sensible option as a fill-in starter.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Being used in relief
Allen is being used as a reliever in Rockies camp and Danielle Allentuck of The Denver Gazette believes he's "a player to keep an eye on this spring."
ANALYSIS
Allen is a former top-100 prospect who bounced through three different organizations in 2022, finishing the year at Triple-A Albuquerque with the Rockies. The left-hander has primarily been a starter in pro ball, but Colorado will give him a look as a reliever and it sounds as if they feel he might have some potential in the role. Allen has struggled to a 5.89 ERA over part of four big-league seasons but won't turn 26 until May.

2018
Allen was one of many young hurlers hurt by the cancellation of the minor-league season. After appearing overmatched in a 2019 cup of coffee, Allen was expected to further develop at Triple-A, but instead he spent most of the season at Cleveland's alternate training site. He was summoned for a two-week stretch in August and returned for the final weekend, but Allen did not fare well in three relief appearances, walking seven with only seven punchouts in 10.2 stanzas. Entering his age-24 season, there's still plenty of time for Cleveland to work its magic on another young starting pitcher. Allen will be given a chance to compete for an MLB rotation spot, but he's likely fallen behind Triston McKenzie and Cal Quantrill and could soon be passed by another guy named Logan Allen. Still, given Cleveland's success grooming pitching, he's worth tracking.
