Fry was reassigned to minor-league camp by the Blue Jays on Monday, Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star reports.
ANALYSIS
Fry had more experience than most of the Blue Jays' non-roster invitees but didn't pitch well this spring. The veteran left-hander has struggled mightily with his control the last two seasons in the majors.

Closer Encounters: 2022 Saves in Review, Part 1
October 12, 2022
Ryan Rufe recaps this past season's saves landscape. Just how many teams preferred closer committees over the conventional approach?

2017
A bright spot in the Orioles' 2020 bullpen, Fry exactly doubled his K-BB% from 10.2% in 2019 to 20.4% last season. He shaved nearly three full runs off his ERA. Fry is an extreme groundball pitcher with a 57.8 GB% for his career -- that number has hardly budged in his three MLB seasons -- and when he wasn't getting groundballs or strikeouts last season, he was getting weak popups in the infield (12.5 IFFB%). Fry is something of a strange case in that he has reverse platoon splits so far in the majors, although it's not enough of a sample to say he fully owns those splits yet, and he has been nearly three runs better at home in Baltimore than on the road so far. This is not a closer profile, but the Baltimore bullpen is wide open and manager Brandon Hyde likes to mix and match. Chances are Fry ends up adding to his total of five career saves, if only by a couple.
Fry led the Orioles with 11 holds last season and also finished fourth on the team in saves with three. As a two-pitch, soft-tossing lefty, Fry has limited upside. He has gotten by thanks to a high groundball rate, with Fry ranking 14th among qualified relievers last season with a 58.0 GB%. He has some odd splits at the major-league level; same-handed batters have had much more success against him than righties, while Fry has been much better at notoriously hitter-friendly Camden Yards (2.91 ERA) than on the road (6.10 ERA) in his two big-league seasons. The Orioles' bullpen is in flux and top closer candidate Mychal Givens could be moved at any time, but it's difficult to imagine Fry taking on a greater share of the closer role and seeing anything more than a handful of matchup-based save opportunities in 2020.
Fry threw 37.2 innings in his debut season, finishing the year with a 3.35 ERA. His 22.6% strikeout rate and 9.4% walk rate were both around league average, but his ability to keep the ball in the park was his greatest strength, as he allowed just one home run. Some of that can be attributed to his high 57.7% groundball rate, though some of it was luck -- regression to his 4.5% HR/FB rate should be expected. Fry finished his rookie season with reverse splits, allowing a .254 wOBA to lefties and a .325 mark to righties. His reliance on a slider, which he threw 43.4% of the time, makes that split something of a surprise. It's unlikely Fry earns saves this season, but the Orioles lack established bullpen arms, so Fry will at least have a chance to carve out steady work in the middle innings.
Fry spent all of 2016 with Triple-A Tacoma, logging 55 innings over 48 games. His 2.78 ERA was very strong and supported to a decent extent by 10.6 K/9 and 0.16 HR/9 rates. In 2015, the southpaw had a double-digit strikeout rate and did not allow a home run all year (90.2 innings) -- it's that steady combination of strikeouts and groundballs has put Fry on the verge of reaching the major league. Fry's already on the 40-man roster, having been added in November ahead of the Rule 5 deadline. The biggest blemish from last season was his 5.1 BB/9 -- he never had that high of a walk rate at previous minor league stops -- and improvement in that area could land Fry in Seattle relatively early on.
