Murton has retired from playing professional baseball and has been working as a scout in the Cubs organization this season, Emily Waldon of The Athletic Detroit reports.
ANALYSIS
Murton attended spring training in 2017 with the Tigers and opened that season at Triple-A Toledo, but appeared in just seven games before getting released. After failing to latch on elsewhere following his exit from the Detroit organization, Murton officially ended his career this March after accepting the scouting position with the Cubs, the team with which he had made his MLB debut back in 2005. The 36-year-old ended up playing parts of five seasons in the big leagues with the Cubs, Athletics and Rockies and hit .286 with 29 home runs in 346 games, but he hadn't appeared in the majors since 2009 after a prolonged, record-setting stint in Japan with the Hanshin Tigers of Nippon Professional Baseball.

Murton failed to capitalize on a fresh start after being acquired from the Cubs and was sent down for good in late July after a 30 at-bat flop. It's hard to see a scenario where he'll get more than 200 at-bats in the A's outfield in 2009 with their offseason focus to acquire more offense. There are skills here, but they've been hidden for a few years now.
After a strong second half of 2006, Murton was shuttled in and out of the lineup last season and even sent down to Triple-A Iowa during the summer. Murton hits for average, has good on-base skills and supplies a little power, but the Cubs want a left-handed-hitting corner outfielder, and at this point, a full-time gig doesn't seem to be in the cards -- at least in Chicago. If Murton were traded to a team that would play him full time, he's a good bet to score close to 100 runs.
Murton fought off a June slump and subsequent benching by then-manager Dusty Baker to finish his first full season strong: he went .319/.390/.522 in 207 at-bats after the All-Star break. He has decent contact skills, will draw a walk and hits for modest power. He'll also steal a handful of bags. Now that he's heading into his third year and has 595 career at-bats under his belt, Murton's a candidate to take a major step up, assuming, of course, the Cubs don't sit him too often against right-handed pitchers. Consider him a sleeper.
Murton made a strong case for the Cubs Opening Day left field job last summer, showing good plate discipline and hitting for average and power in 140 big league at-bats. The Cubs don't even have a right fielder at press time, so despite having veteran-loving Dusty Baker as his manager, Murton has a good chance to land a regular spot in the lineup. Murton can also run a little, as evidenced by his 18 steals in 78 games at Double-A last year.
The 30th overall pick in the 2003 draft, Murton held his own at high Single-A last season, going .301/.372/.452. He's shown decent plate discipline and a fair amount of pop so far, but the true test will be at Double-A where he'll almost certainly begin the year.
