Weekly Pitcher Rankings: On the Trade Block?

Weekly Pitcher Rankings: On the Trade Block?

This article is part of our Weekly Pitcher Rankings series.

We kick off interleague play this week with thrilling matchups along the lines of Cleveland at Miami, Kansas City at Arizona and Atlanta at Tampa Bay. On the plus side, we do get to see Josh Hamilton beat up on Astros pitching, so there is that.

Here is my rotation in a 10-team NL-only league (note I am able to start six starters a week):

Every week starters:

Matt Garza
Ricky Nolasco
Anibal Sanchez
Edwin Jackson

Others:

Joe Blanton - Three wins and solid ratios.

Paul Maholm - Four wins and solid ration, but I'm probably best off quitting while I'm ahead.

Trevor Cahill - I've had him in there most of the time and he's been solid, if not a bit strikeout-challenged.

James McDonald - After Friday, McDonald has a 2.42 ERA and I've rarely used him. Of course if I put him in now, he'll get rocked.

For the week May 14-20

Notes: Chien-Ming Wang
is close to returning from a hamstring injury, but with Ross Detwiler locking down the No. 5 starter job, Wang is likely to return as a reliever. Just as likely - he gets traded soon. ... Like Roy Halladay a couple years ago, get prepared for months of Cole Hamels trade speculation. If you're an NL-only owner of Hamels, it's time to get a little concerned. ... Another dominating performance by Stephen Strasburg (13 K's) this week. I'm thinking a sub-2.00 ERA and 200 strikeouts in 180 innings sounds about right. ... Odd that Ryan Dempster leads all starters with a 1.02 ERA. Even odder that Baltimore infielder Chris Davis has more wins than Dempster. ... Erik Bedard left his last start after just one inning due to a sore back. Check his status this weekend before setting your lineups. ... As of May 10, other than Lance Lynn, no pitcher has more than five wins; and to think, he probably wouldn't be in the rotation if not for the injury to Chris Carpenter (shoulder). ... Edinson Volquez has a 2.98 ERA and 38 strikeouts. If he could just improve his shaky control, he could be a top-20 fantasy starter, particularly in that ballpark. ... Mike Minor saw his ERA rise to 6.59 Friday, likely putting him on thin ice. In related news, Julio Teheran has a 2.81 ERA in six Triple-A starts. ... That Gio Gonzalez deal is looking pretty good for both sides right now. Gonzalez is second in the NL to Stephen Strasburg with his 50 strikeouts. ... The Rockies demoted the wrong pitcher to Triple-A in Drew Pomeranz. Alex White and Christian Friedrich rightfully stick around, but Juan Nicasio could use some Triple-A time.

Notes:
Is Josh Beckett the most hated player in Boston? After the whole golf/injury fiasco, Beckett goes out in his next start and pitches like a girl. This could get ugly quickly. ... Brandon McCarthy (shoulder) is set to go this week, but I would hesitate to use him until he proves he's 100 percent. ... Very odd game for Colby Lewis this week: five home runs and 12 strikeouts. Even odder - the five homers were the only hits he allowed in the game. Despite the rash of long balls, he's still a top option in all formats. ... Here are the totals for Brandon Morrow over his last three starts: 21 innings, 12 hits, one run, four walks, 27 strikeouts. He will be ranked very high this week. ... Odd stat: Henderson Alvarez's ERA matches his K/9 rate - both are 2.61. ... Max Scherzer has an 18:2 K:BB in 13.1 innings over his last two starts. It would be nice to see some consistency from him. ... Fire the coach? Justin Masterson and Ubaldo Jimenez are tied for the major league lead in walks with 25. I was sure wrong about these two this year, as I really thought they could help make the Indians a surprise team. ... Pretty tough to hold onto Matt Moore right now in redraft leagues, eh? I have to think he turns things around as soon as the coaches figure out why the 4.7 BB/9IP. ... Welcome back: Andy Pettitte. ... I can't say that the White Sox's handling of Chris Sale hasn't been head-scratching, but it's good to see him back in the rotation. Guessing presumed closer Addison Reed is taken in your leagues.
