Notes:
Nats GM knows more than all of us, but I still disagree with the decision to shut down Stephen Strasburg. Strasburg will reportedly be shut down after two or three more starts. ... Meanwhile, the Braves have handled Kris Medlen quite a bit different coming off his Tommy John surgery, electing to start him in the bullpen. As a starter, Medlen is working in a 28-inning scoreless streak. Advantage: Braves. ... It's looking more and more like Roger Clemens will wind up in Houston this month. It's clearly a shameless Favre-like publicity stunt, but if you want to pick him up in 12-team NL-only leagues for the sheer novelty of it, go for it. Meanwhile, I'm left wondering whether my Clemens 84 Fleer Traded PSA 10 is worth a whole lot. ... Shaun Marcum left his most recent start with a calf injury, likely lessening the Dodgers' interest. ... Chad Billingsley (elbow) could be done for the year, but stay tuned. ... There seems to be a decent chance that Clayton Kershaw gets two starts this week. He's set to go Tuesday, but with the trip to San Francisco for a potentially make-or-break series, I could see him getting a second start given Thursday's off-day. ... Jeff Locke is probably the best bet to be the "PIT TBD" guy this week. ... James McDonald has a 2.00 ERA in his last three starts, so he's looking like a strong play again. ... Adam Wainwright was 5-0 with a 1.47 ERA in August. Safe to say he's fully recovered from Tommy John surgery. ... Eric Stults is 4-0 with a 2.02 ERA in his last five starts, but he's still the type who could implode at any moment. It's still hard to believe Stults lost out on the Marty McFly role. ... Kyle Kendrick has allowed a total of four runs over his last four starts but using him in Cincinnati this week seems ill-advised. ... Edwin Jackson and Clayton Kershaw wound up tied for the MLB lead in strikeouts in August with 49. ... Cliff Leefinished August with a 37:1 K:BB. Not bad.

Notes:
Seven innings of two-run ball for Zack Greinke on Thursday in a win over the Red Sox. He seems poised for a strong finish given his skillset. ... Matt Moore has a 2.08 ERA since the All-Star break, so he's clearly finishing strong after a relatively disappointing start. ... Nice start by Zach Britton on Thursday - 8 innings, 1 run, 10:0 K:BB. He'll be a part of the rotation in September, one would think. ... With Jeff Niemann back, it's unclear how the Rays will slot their rotation this week. Alex Cobb could be the odd man out, but watch for an announcement over the weekend. ... Miguel Gonzalez is pitching well and is worth using in the right AL-only matchups, but beware his 4.5 K/9IP in August. ... It was as solid seven innings for Daisuke Matsuzaka in his return. I wonder if he ends up traded before this piece gets posted? ... I'm sort of regretting not using Brett Anderson in my fantasy playoffs this week. I didn't think he'd be this good this fast, particularly averaging seven innings in two starts. ... Jason Hammel (knee) returns this week to an improbable 3.54 ERA, but he's probably best benched against the Yankees. ... David Phelps has had a quietly-productive year with a 2.96 ERA and 73:21 K:BB in 70 innings, including seven K's in each of his last two starts. At this rate, he's a favorite for a 2013 rotation spot. ... Hard to imagine Carlos Villanueva maintaining a 3.10 ERA, but you have to ride him for now. ... There is some really bad pitching in the NL Central right now outside of the Tigers and to some extent, the White Sox, rotations. With their pitching, I can easily see the Tigers running away with this division. ... CC Sabathia had a 34:3 K:BB in his four August starts (30 innings), so he appears 100 percent healthy.
