FanDuel MLB: Wednesday Value Plays

FanDuel MLB: Wednesday Value Plays

This article is part of our FanDuel MLB series.

Pitcher

Gio Gonzalez, WAS vs. MIL ($8,500): Gonzalez has been dominant at home to date, owning a 1.95 ERA at Nats Park with 59 strikeouts in 55.1 frames. He'll face a Brewers lineup that is at least steady against lefties (.328 wOBA), but they also carry a 26.1 percent strikeout rate against them, setting Gonzalez up for a potentially higher ceiling than usual.

Catcher

Alex Avila, DET vs. KAN ($2,400): Following Tuesday's day off, Avila seems likely to start Wednesday, and his continued success against righties makes for a nice play at this price. He leads the Tigers with a .389 wOBA and 146 wRC+ against opposite-handed arms, while Royals starter Ian Kennedy has a 4.98 home ERA and has allowed 10 runs and 18 hits over his last three starts, spanning 16.2 frames.

First Base

Anthony Rizzo, CHC at CWS ($4,100): Stacking the surging Cubs' bats against a struggling James Shields certainly seems prudent. Shields has allowed 24 runs in his last five appearances, spanning 24.1 innings. He's been shredded by lefties to boot, allowing a .442 wOBA and 1.085 OPS. That should play well for Rizzo and his .423 wOBA, 1.027 OPS and 161 wRC+.

Second Base

Matt Carpenter, STL vs. COL ($3,500): Carpenter brings a corner infielder profile into a misplaced position assignment presently. He ranks second on the club with a .374 wOBA, and 130 wRC+ and despite a season-long 18.0 percent strikeout rate, he's fanned only 4.7 percent of the time while starting at the keystone. Rockies' starter Jeff Hoffman has allowed 15 runs and 26 hits over his last three games, spanning 16.0 innings.

Third Base

Mike Moustakas, KAN at DET ($3,500): Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez has allowed 10 earned runs and 20 hits over his last 17.2 innings and carries a 5.90 home ERA into Wednesday. Moustakas counters with a team-leading .372 wOBA and .302 ISO against righties, numbers that rise substantially over 50 July plate appearances to: .400 wOBA, 151 wRC+, .417 ISO and 1.008 OPS.

Shortstop

Corey Seager, LAD vs. MIN (3,700): Shortstop continues to present quite a conundrum for managers, with only three active players checking in north of $3,000. If you're willing to pay up, Seager and his .371 wOBA, 132 wRC+ and .201 ISO looks like the best bet of the three options. Twins starter Ervin Santana has a 5.67 ERA over his last 39.1 innings dating back to June 14, allowing lefties to post a .387 wOBA and five home runs to 75 batters faced.

Outfield

Hunter Renfroe, SDP vs. NYM ($3,100): Renfroe loves facing southpaws, owning a .422 wOBA, 164 wRC+, .318 ISO and 1.024 OPS against them to date; all team highs. Sure, he's just a .232 hitter overall, so there's an inherent risk of zero points, but the upside in the matchup makes for a great tournament play against a struggling Steven Matz, who has allowed 15 earned runs and three homers over his last 10.1 innings.

Max Kepler, MIN at LAD ($2,800): Kepler doesn't enter Wednesday in stellar form, having produced just one double-digit point total since the All-Star Break. But he still leads the Twins with a .366 wOBA and 129 wRC+ against righties to date, numbers that are remarkably identical in July. The Dodgers will start Brock Stewart, who seems likely to be capped at 60-ish pitches. There's little risk involved with Kepler, and while the reward may be equally low, the matchup sets up well as the Dodgers work to piece together nine innings of pitching.

Kyle Schwarber, CHC at CWS ($2,700): Maybe the aforementioned Anthony Rizzo isn't in your budget Wednesday. Enter Schwarber against James Shields, whose struggles overall, and against lefties, have already been highlighted. Schwarber has been deployed as a platoon option since his brief demotion, but owns a .386 wOBA, 137 wRC+ and .930 OPS in July against opposite-handed arms, having gone deep three times in 38 place appearances.
