2015
Despite what was a miserable season overall from a team perspective, Harrison’s play was a bright spot. The third-year guard showed significant across-the-board improvement compared to his rookie campaign, averaging 9.5 points, 3.2 assists and 2.3 rebounds across 23.7 minutes over 56 games. Harrison’s biggest leap came in shooting percentage, as he upped his overall success rate to 42.2 percent (from 32.5 percent his rookie season). The 23-year-old is capable of playing both guard spots, but the presumed return of Mike Conley to full health will naturally put a significant dent in Harrison’s minutes during the coming season. Meanwhile, Dillon Brooks and capable veteran Garrett Temple slot in as the top two options at two-guard, which could make it difficult for Harrison to carve out appreciable playing time there. If injuries were to strike, the former Kentucky Wildcat could certainly serve as a valuable in-season waiver-wire add.
Harrison, the 44th overall pick of the 2015 NBA Draft, made his debut last season. The 6-foot-6 guard was given a significant 20.5 minutes per game over his 72 appearances, 18 of which were starts. He was used as a combo guard, playing 67 percent of his minutes at point guard and 33 percent of his minutes at shooting guard. During 2016-17, he posted 5.9 points, 2.8 assists and 1.9 rebounds per contest. That said, he shot an abysmal 32.5 percent from the field and 43-of-156 (27.6 percent) from deep. While the Grizzlies didn’t do much over the summer to directly bolster their reserve point guard situation, the team acquired Tyreke Evans, who fits a ball-handling sixth-man mold. Though the team wasn’t shy about deploying Harrison for significant minutes last year, his numbers were quite poor overall, so it wouldn’t be surprising if Evans absorbed much of Harrion’s workload. For those reasons, Harrison can likely be safely avoided in seemingly every Fantasy format.
Drafted 44th overall by the Suns and subsequently traded to the Grizzlies for Jon Leuer, Harrison averaged 5.4 points, 2.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 0.6 steals in 24 minutes per game through five games at the Orlando Summer League. He shot 36 percent from the field, 40 percent from downtown, and 69 percent from the free throw-line, attempting only five three-pointers in five starts and committing 2.0 turnovers per game. In 39 games at the University of Kentucky, Harrison posted 9.3 points, 2.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.0 steal, and 0.2 blocks in 26 minutes per game, shooting 38 percent from the field, 38 percent from beyond the arc, and 79 percent from the free-throw line. Harrison's contract is non-guaranteed, which means unless there's something else in the works, the 20-year-old guard will be forced to beat out a more experienced player if he hopes to make the Grizzlies' roster this season.
