Leaving Nevada program
QBNo Current School
September 27, 2017
Nevada announced Tuesday that Cornwell would transfer from the Wolf Pack's football program, Chris Murray of the Reno Gazette-Journal reports.
ANALYSIS
A touted high-school recruit who began his college career at Alabama, Cornwell transferred to Nevada last December and entered fall camp as the top candidate to start at quarterback for the Wolf Pack. However, he ended up surrendering the gig to Ty Gangi, who lost the starting job following a poor showing in the opener and dropped to third on the depth chart. Rather than turning to Cornwell, coach Jay Norvell ended up starting true freshman Kaymen Cureton the last two games, though Cornwell came on in relief last Saturday against Washington State, completing 13 of 25 passes for 97 yards and three interceptions. Cornwell's ugly outing resulted in Norvell reshuffling the depth chart once again, with Gangi being named the starter for the team's Mountain West opener against Fresno State during the upcoming weekend and Cureton in line to serve as the top backup. With Cornwell falling to third in the pecking order and unlikely to receive a chance to start at any point this season barring injuries to the aforementioned two signal callers, he apparently decided it was in his best interest to evaluate opportunities elsewhere. Cornwell would be eligible to play at any FCS school immediately, but would have to sit out the 2018 campaign if he were to transfer to another FBS program.
