Freshman running back Ty Chandler should get an opportunity to take over the backfield for the Volunteers, following Kelly's departure.

Kelly ascended from third-stringer to starter in the span of one calendar year, as Jalen Hurd transferred to Baylor and Alvin Kamara went to the NFL. Kelly still ran exceptionally in 2016 despite limited carries, averaging a stout 6.4 yards per tote en route to 630 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Though Kelly is smaller than Hurd and not the receiver that Kamara is, Kelly should still see an extremely heavy workload with new quarterback Quinten Dormady under center. Tennessee lost its starting quarterback and top wideout to the NFL, making the running game all the more important, and Kelly should be the chief beneficiary.
