Heading to free agency
CBMiami Dolphins
February 9, 2024
Apple recorded 46 tackles (37 solo), 0.5 sacks and nine pass breakups, including one interception, across 10 regular-season appearances with the Dolphins in 2023.
ANALYSIS
Apple started four games for Miami due to injuries ahead of him at cornerback, filling exactly the role the team expected of him while on a one-year deal. Heading into free agency, he no longer seems like a candidate for an actual starting role in the league, but he offers tangible value as an experienced depth option. The 28-year-old may not be one of the hottest names on the free-agent market, but he should be able to resurface in at least a reserve role for the 2024 campaign.

The tenth overall pick in 2016, Apple will play for the third team of his young career in joining the Panthers ahead of the 2020 campaign. After initial turbulence in New York, Apple found his footing in New Orleans last season, finishing with 58 tackles, four passes defended and a fumble recovery while starting all 15 games he played. In Carolina, the Panthers will hope Apple carries that consistency into a cornerback group that's largely unproven following James Bradberry's first-agent departure. Although recent second-rounder Donte Jackson returns, his uneven play could very well see Apple top the depth chart with his new team.
After two and a half rocky seasons with the Giants both on the field and in the locker room, Apple received a much-needed change of scenery in October, when he was dealt to the Saints. In New Orleans, the 2016 first-round pick immediately supplanted the struggling Ken Crawley at the starting cornerback spot opposite Marshon Lattimore, helping the Saints' pass defense stage a dramatic turnaround in the process. While he didn't grade out as a standout contributor in the secondary and had his pricey fifth-year team option declined by New Orleans during the offseason, Apple's merely serviceable play was a welcome development and solidified his hold on a starting role heading into 2019.
The team's 2016 first-round pick, Apple had a forgettable 2017, with poor play, a suspension, clashes with teammates and time missed while being with his mother who had brain surgery. The Giants new regime has offered Apple a clean slate, however, and at press time he slots as the team's starting cornerback opposite Janoris Jenkins.
Last year's first round pick, Apple had a solid season as a cover corner, and he'll again start opposite Janoris Jenkins. While Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie will also have a high snap count, the Giants will be in nickel defense so often it shouldn't affect Apple's workload.
Giants' first-round pick, Apple will work on the outside and occasionally in the slot, often in nickel and dime packages. But he's unlikely to start with Janoris Jenkins, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Leon Hall in the fold.
