The Eagles placed Brown on the reserve/retired list Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Brought in by the Eagles this offseason to compete for a starting linebacker spot, Brown instead has opted for retirement before the campaign kicks off. With the 26-year-old out of the picture, second-year pro T.J. Edwards has a much easier path to take on middle linebacker for Philly this season.

Brown sustained an ankle injury at the end of the 2018 regular season and began last year on the PUP list. By the time he returned Week 3, he'd lost his job and would play more than 17 defensive snaps just once in all of 2019. Now on a one-year, prove-it deal with the Eagles, the 26-year-old will have to earn a starting role in camp. He has experience on his side, however, as his 22 career starts are more than any other linebacker currently on the roster. Most importantly, he'll have to show that he's past the injury and tackling issues that have plagued him so far in his career.
The offseason re-signing of Denzel Perryman likely quelled any optimism regarding Brown turning into a breakout IDP candidate in 2019. Still, given the Perryman's injury history (16 games missed in the past two seasons) it's not hard to envision a scenario where at some point this season Brown becomes the focal point in an emerging linebacking corps. Brown recorded a career-high in tackles (97) in 2018, but that occurred only after season-ending injuries to Perryman and Kyzir White, the latter of which is expected to regain his role as coverage linebacker in obvious passing situations.
After a promising rookie campaign, Brown's second season was a major disappointment, as the middle linebacker eventually fell out of the team's rotation following a string of poor performances. The surprising drop-off in production prompted the Chargers to retain the services of Nick Dzubnar and Hayes Pullard in the offseason, both of whom briefly started at ILB in 2017, as well as select Ucheena Nwosu in the second-round of the 2018 NFL Draft. As a result, Brown will have to ascend a loaded depth chart if he has any hopes of starting alongside incumbent ILB Denzel Perryman.
The NFL took Brown for an afterthought as a 220-pound linebacker out of Akron, but the Chargers clearly got a steal by snagging him in the fifth round of last year's draft. Brown went three rounds later for the sin of playing at a small school. It took injuries to Denzel Perryman and Manti Te'o for Brown to get the opportunity, but he made quite an impression as a rookie. With 79 tackles and 3.5 sacks while playing just 599 snaps, Brown made it clear he possesses unique upside as a tackle and blitzing threat now that Te'o isn't in town.
