2023 Fantasy Outlook
After nine seasons in Buffalo and 12 in the NFL, Hughes signed on to be a veteran presence on the rebuilding Texans. At 34 and with his peak years behind him, Hughes dabbled in the fountain of youth and recorded nine sacks, the most since the 10 quarterback takedowns he had in 2014. The foreboding dark cloud to the season was that he had just one sack over the final eight games, which suggests his advanced years are a factor. He'll be 35 when the regular season drops and will be hard pressed to repeat last season's performance. Hughes could be productive as a part-time contributor, along with Jonathan Greenard, and benefit from the presence of third-overall pick in the 2023 Draft, edge rusher Will Anderson. Hughes will be forced to miss a second game in a row after injuring his ankle in Week 18. In his absence, Derek Barnett and Myjai Sanders are candidates to see an increased workload on Houston's defensive line versus Baltimore.

Still a somewhat productive player, Hughes took another half-step back last year, producing only 44 total tackles and four sacks in 16 games with the Bills. His name recognition likely will provide a little bit of helium in IDP drafts, removing him from any consideration of being a value pick.
Originally a bust first-round pick for Indianapolis, Hughes headed to Buffalo as a reclamation project in 2013 and initially flourished. He posted 10 sacks each of his two first years there, but then Rex Ryan and his 3-4 scheme miscast Hughes the following two years. With the arrival of coach Sean McDermott, though, Buffalo is switching back to the 4-3 scheme, making Hughes a strong buy-low target. After posting just 11 sacks the last two years, Hughes could eclipse that figure this season alone upon returning to his more natural position.
Following back-to-back seasons with double-digit sacks, Hughes dropped back down to five in 2015. A revitalization of Hughes and the rest of the Buffalo front seven will be a requirement to get this defense back to where it was just two years ago.
Re-signed to a lucrative five-year, $45 million contract this spring, Hughes has blossomed since joining the Bills via trade in 2013, as he's posted 19.5 sacks over the past two seasons. Additionally, Hughes has been credited with 99 tackles, five forced fumbles, and one fumble recovery since arriving in Buffalo, evidencing his well-rounded skill set. As the Bills transition to new coach Rex Ryan's new scheme, Hughes figures to occupy an outside pass-rushing position opposite Pro Bowler Mario Williams, continuing a tandem that helped Buffalo finish last season in the NFL lead with 54 total sacks.
Hughes could surprise as an upfield threat in the Jim Schwartz 4-3 scheme. There is real sleeper value here, especially with regard to potential for sacks.
The former first round pick was traded to the Bills in the off-season. Looking to shed the 'bust' label, Hughes has a chance to start in a hybrid right end position in Mike Pettine's defense.
Hughes, a 2010 first-round pick, has been a bust in his career and was almost released last season. However, the change to the 3-4 defense may revitalize him as he has skills as a pass rusher as an outside linebacker that were not utilized in the previous 4-3 scheme.
Hughes is undersized, but has excellent pass-rushing skills. The Colts' will utilize him as a backup, but he could record a couple of sacks.
