Could see larger role
STennessee Titans
December 17, 2018
Lewis is in line for a larger role now that Logan Ryan (leg) is out for the season, Turron Davenport of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Lewis averaged 52 snaps per game between Weeks 4 and 7 this year, but he's fallen out of the rotation almost entirely since then. Ryan's injury Sunday opened the door for Lewis to again see the field, and he responded with a season-high nine tackles and a pass defensed. He'll figure to see significant time for the remainder of the year if he can maintain Sunday's high level of play.

A 2010 fifth-round draft pick, Lewis has started 81 of his 84 career regular season games, including each of his 15 appearances for the Ravens last season – even though he failed to impress. In addition to giving up some costly big plays, he didn't have any interceptions and managed just 61 tackles, perhaps ending his lengthy run as an NFL starter. The Ravens signed Eric Weddle to man one safety spot, and they're expected to move long-time cornerback Lardarius Webb to the other. At best, Lewis will compete with Webb for a starting job.
A 16-game starter for the Texans in 2014, Lewis recorded 84 tackles (52 solo), two interceptions and three forced fumbles. He's a capable but unspectacular player, which should give him an advantage over former first-round draft pick Matt Elam in a likely competition for a starting role, especially after Elam was constantly picked on last season.
Lewis is one of two free-agent safeties signed in the offseason and presumably will be a strong a candidate to start at strong safety. His experience playing for Houston defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel when he was head coach in Kansas City figures to give him a leg up on other safeties on the roster.
Lewis is expected to start at free safety opposite Eric Berry. He struggled to stay healthy in 2012, but Lewis showed promise in his first two seasons with good coverage instincts and plus ball skills.
Lewis will start at the free safety spot next to Eric Berry. With the presence of Berry and Pro Bowl linebacker Derrick Johnson, that may not leave enough tackles for Lewis to be a consistent producer in most IDP formats. But for a player who has posted three interceptions in each of his first two seasons, it's possible he could make some noise in leagues that reward more highly for turnovers and big plays.
Lewis is expected to start at the free safety position next to Pro Bowl strong safety Eric Berry. After finishing second on the team in 2010 in limited action with three interceptions, he could have some upside as an IDP if his tackle numbers increase.
Fifth-overall pick Eric Berry might not be the only rookie the Chiefs use as a starting safety this season; Lewis worked extensively with the first-team defense during the spring while Jarrad Page was out. With Page's future in Kansas City slightly murky, Lewis could potentially earn a starting role with a strong camp. Unfortunately, he's not blessed with prototypical size or speed, so he'll have to make do with good instincts and strong football savvy. He could have IDP value as a starter, but he has a lot of hurdles to jump before any type of fantasy production emerges.
