Rey has been a solid if not spectacular fill-in at multiple linebacker slots for the Bengals over the years, with his big tackle numbers correlating nearly perfectly with Vontaze Burfict's numerous absences over the years. Such was the case in 2017, when he recorded 55 of his 85 tackles in the six games that Burfict missed. That tackle spike might not happen during Burfict's four-game suspension in 2018, following the acquisition of Preston Brown from Buffalo. Unfortunately if Rey isn't logging big tackle numbers, he's not much help in IDP leagues -- he's had just one sack in the last four seasons.
An ironman at middle linebacker, Rey hasn't missed a game since 2010 for the Bengals. Last season he recorded 86 tackles, seven pass defensed and one interception in 16 games, including 12 starts. However, the waters became a bit muddied this offseason when the Bengals signed Kevin Minter to a one-year contract. With Vontaze Burfict locking in as starter at the weakside linebacker position, Minter may be forced to move to middle linebacker and compete with Rey for a starting gig. If that is the case, the 29-year-old could be due for a slight dip in numbers in 2017.
Ray has played in all 16 games for the Bengals for five years in a row, and figures to start for the duration of the season once again, assuming he stays healthy. In 2015, he was on the field for 66.9 percent of Cincinnati's defensive snaps, by far the most of any linebacker on the team. He turned in a well rounded season, registering 98 tackles, one sack, one interception, and five passes defensed. He’s likely in line for a similar campaign in 2016.
Rey will be a back up linebacker for the Bengals this season.
