Draughn had a workout with the Saints on Monday, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Draughn dealt with an ankle injury in the offseason and was released by the Giants at roster cutdowns in September. The Saints' recent trade of Adrian Peterson to the Cardinals helps explain the workout, but barring an injury, Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara likely have a stranglehold on the backfield snaps, even if New Orleans has further interest in Draughn.

The journeyman back joins his seventh organization in seven NFL seasons, which is a testament to his stubbornness if nothing else. Draughn played in all 16 games last season for the 49ers, just the second time in his career he's accomplished that feat, and he's developed into a serviceable pass-catching option out of the backfield. He was also used as a short-yardage back in San Francisco, which partially excuses his awful 2.6 YPC, but while he has decent size at 5-11, 205 pounds, Draughn doesn't have the power or burst to excel in that area. Now a Giant, he'll provide Paul Perkins with a veteran backup who can handle any situation, but it would take a rash of injuries for Draughn to see enough touches to have relevance in most fantasy leagues.
Draughn was picked up mid-season and seized the starting job vacated by Carlos Hyde. The results weren't pretty (263 rushing yards and 175 receiving yards in six games), but it was enough for the 49ers to keep him around for depth in 2016. Chip Kelly's NFL offense traditionally uses multiple backs, so Draughn could still see a handful of touches behind Carlos Hyde. He has been named the 49ers' primary backup at running back heading into Week 1.
Draughn, a 27-year-old veteran, will have to fight to earn a roster spot behind Isaiah Crowell, Terrence West and Duke Johnson on the running back depth chart. He collected all 10 of his 2014 carries in Week 4 last season while playing for San Diego, and only tallied eight offensive snaps the rest of the way out. At this pace, he'll be hard-pressed to find playing time, even if he does end up making the team. The four-year veteran may do more to help his case by proving his utility on special teams.
After serving as the Chiefs' primary backup running back in 2012, Draughn saw light action in only three games with the Ravens last season, attempting only two carries. He latched on with the Bears on a one-year deal in April, and will compete with Michael Ford and rookies Ka'Deem Carey and Jordan Lynch for the right to back up Matt Forte in the team's ground attack.
Draughn will compete with rookie Knile Davis for the right to be the primary backup to Jamaal Charles.
Draughn will compete with rookie Cyrus Gray for a spot in the running back rotation behind Jamaal Charles and Peyton Hillis. He is more likely to land on the practice squad than he is to earn any significant playing time.
