Escobar was released by the Dolphins on Monday, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reports.
ANALYSIS
Escobar re-signed with Miami after failing to make the 53-man roster, but he'll now return to the open market with the Dolphins needing to open up a roster spot for the signing of center Travis Swanson. Miami has just three healthy tight ends on the roster, with Mike Gesicki operating as the top pass-catching option within the unit.

Miami brought in Escobar to serve as depth after the Julius Thomas experiment ended, but the pick of second round rookie Mike Gesicki squashed any hope of Escobar taking prominent receiving snaps this season. The 27-year-old has never eclipsed 150 receiving yards in a season, and with Gesicki, A.J. Derby, MarQueis Gray and Durham Smythe all battling for roles, Escobar only has an outside shot at making the 53-man roster.
Escobar spent the first four years of his career playing second fiddle to Jason Witten in Dallas, but his contract expired and he moved on to Kansas City this offseason. The 26-year-old didn't do enough in camp or the preseason to earn a roster spot over either Demetrius Harris or Ross Travis, leading to his release when the Chiefs were forced to cut down to a 53-man roster.
The tall tight end hasn't gotten a chance to establish himself as anything more than an occasional red zone target in his three years in Dallas thanks to the ageless Jason Witten's presence, and Escobar could begin 2016 on the PUP list after tearing his Achilles tendon late last season. If and when he does rejoin the roster, don't expect his role to increase in a Cowboys' offense loaded with other receiving options.
A second-round pick by Dallas in 2013, Escobar hasn't gotten many chances to show what he can do behind Jason Witten, recording just nine catches in each of his first two NFL seasons for a total of 239 yards. Incredibly though, six of those 18 receptions have resulted in touchdowns, highlighting his red zone value. Escobar doesn't have much foot speed, but he possess soft hands and a huge catch radius and flashes surprising athleticism (as anyone who's seen the often-replayed video of his somersault into the end zone from the Cowboys' final game of 2013 can attest). With Witten finally beginning to show his age, Escobar's time to take on a bigger role in the offense could be now.
Escobar, Dallas' second-round pick in last year's draft, is the heir-apparent to aging veteran Jason Witten, but he struggled to see the field much in 2013 (only appearing in 11.4 offensive snaps per game) due to blocking deficiencies. Still, Escobar showed flashes of his prominent receiving chops, including a highlight-reel touchdown catch in Week 17. Early reports out of Dallas indicate that Escobar has taken it upon himself to get stronger and become a more complete player, but as long as Witten remains a Cowboy, Escobar will have to wait his turn.
Second round pick Escobar will compete for snaps with James Hanna in two-tight end sets as a rookie, but long term he could be the heir apparent to Jason Witten.
