The Bears waived Carey (wrist) on Friday after both parties came to terms on an injury settlement, Patrick Finley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Carey underwent wrist surgery in mid-August, which was expected to keep him sidelined for six weeks. He was going to be forced to sit on the Bears' IR for the remainder of the season if both sides could not come to terms on a settlement. The running back will now be free to find a new opportunity once his health allows it.

In three years with the Bears, the 2014 fourth-round pick has failed to carry the ball more than 45 times in any of those campaigns. He also failed to reach four YPC in both of the last two years, thereby explaining inactive status for the last two games of the 2016 season. With Jordan Howard in firm control of primary running back duties, Carey was on the roster bubble even before he needed wrist surgery in late August. With rookie Tarik Cohen looking like a solid change-of-pace option, the Bears might just release Carey with an injury settlement.
A 2014 fourth-round selection, Carey has failed to impress through two seasons, averaging just 4.0 yards on 79 carries, with minimal contribution (eight catches) as a receiver out of the backfield. When Matt Forte was hurt last season, the Bears primarily turned to 2015 fourth-rounder Jeremy Langford, who is poised to replace Forte as the team's starting running back. Carey thus figures to compete with fifth-round rookie Jordan Howard for backup work, though a slow start by Langford could open the door for both players. At 5-10, 210 pounds, with a 4.7 40 time from the 2014 Combine, Carey doesn't boast an impressive athletic profile, yet still managed consecutive seasons (2012-13) with 1,800+ rushing yards at the University of Arizona. He won't turn 24 until October.
The Bears’ limited running-back depth behind Matt Forte entering last season prompted the team’s selection of Carey, an All-American standout from Arizona, with their fourth-round choice in the 2014 NFL draft. While Carey didn’t have much trouble emerging as Forte’s top backup out of training camp, seeing the field during the season proved a far greater challenge. Thanks to his good health and prowess as a pass catcher, Forte remained on the field for a whopping 92 percent of the Bears’ offensive snaps, resulting in Carey finishing his rookie year with just 36 carries and 158 rushing yards, most of which came in garbage time. Although new coach John Fox has pledged to reduce Forte’s workload in 2015, it doesn’t appear Carey will be the main beneficiary of increased snaps. The Bears signed third-down specialist Jacquizz Rodgers in free agency and spent a fourth-round choice on Michigan State back Jeremy Langford in May, suggesting that the new regime probably isn’t sold on Carey as the ideal understudy to Forte.
A two-time consensus All-American, Carey gained a spectacular 4,290 yards from scrimmage and 44 touchdowns over his final two seasons at Arizona, leading the Bears to select him in the fourth round despite his underwhelming measurables, including a 4.70 40 time at the NFL Combine. The 5-9, 207-pound Carey is a sharp-cutting, tackle-breaking runner with receiving skills who looks a lot quicker on tape than his 40 time would imply, but will find the going a lot tougher against the NFL's faster, better-tackling secondaries. With no other exciting runners in Chicago's stable behind Matt Forte, Carey is the front-runner to serve as the backup, making him a runner of interest in fantasy.
