Hal announced Tuesday that he is retiring from the NFL, Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Hal was limited to eight games in 2018 as he recovered from a battle with Hodgkin's lymphoma, though he indicated his decision to retire is not related to his health. The 26-year-old played in 69 games over his five years with the Texans and had 189 tackles (130 solo) with 12 interceptions, two forced fumbles and one touchdown.

After inking a three-year contract extension in the offseason, Hal turned in his best season in 2017 while the overall Texans defense took a major step back. He played a career-high 943 snaps with 71 tackles and three interceptions in 16 games. Though Hal held his won, the secondary as a whole didn't play very well and the Texans took measures to address the back end of their defense. Tyrann Mathieu was brought in from Arizona, then Houston used its first pick in the 2018 draft to select Jordan Reid, a combo cornerback/safety who is expected to contribute immediately. Hal was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma this offseason and the team will understandably give him as much time off as he needs.
Hal has started 22 games the last two seasons for Houston and is presumed to be the starting free safety in 2017. He was second in defensive snaps behind the departed Quinin Demps in 2016, and he was one of only two members of the defense with multiple picks. Entering his fourth season in Houston, the 2014 seventh-round draft pick is well versed in the ways of the Texans defense and at the very least, should be among the unit's leading tacklers.
Hal, a 2014 seventh-round draft pick, got into 14 games as a rookie, seeing time as the nickel cornerback while returning an interception for a touchdown. With the Texans selecting a cornerback in the first round of the 2015 draft, it would appear the job Hal held last season is in jeopardy. He's been working out at safety during training camp, at times with the first-team defense, so he may still play a significant role in 2015. If anything, the position versatility will secure him a roster spot.
Hal is a small-ish cornerback drafted in the sixth round of the 2013 draft out of Vanderbilt. Despite the 5-10, 188-pound frame, he led the SEC in passes defensed. He's not going to usurp a starting spot from Kareem Jackson or Jonathan Joseph, but he may work as a nickel back who can stay with the shiftier slot receivers in the middle of the field.
