Siemens wasn't extended a qualifying offer from the Avalanche on Monday and will now become an unrestricted free agent, Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Siemens played in a career-high 16 games for the Avalanche this past season, though he logged just two total points, 23 PIM and 22 hits. That wasn't enough to bet a qualifying offer and the 24-year-old will now be able to sign anywhere July 1 as an unrestricted free agent. Siemens' physical presence should earn him a look elsewhere, though he's not guaranteed to find anything more than a minor role.

Siemens proved he was willing to sacrifice his body when the Avalanche promoted him to the top level last season, racking up 22 hits and 21 blocked shots while logging 23 PIM over 16 contests. The 24-year-old blueliner has a history as an enforcer, totaling 90 or more PIM during both 2015-16 and 2016-17 with AHL San Antonio. Colorado opted against extending Siemens a qualifying offer for this season, but he should find some form of a contract elsewhere in the NHL or AHL.
Siemens is a young 19-year-old defenseman who was selected 11th overall back in 2011. He spent his last three full seasons in the WHL where he showcased his ability to be an solid two-way defender (91 points in his three full seasons). Siemens will not likely see any action at the NHL level this season, but could be called upon to get some experience if the Avs are at the bottom of the Western Conference towards the latter end of the season. He doesn't project as a offensive defender, but instead a top-four, two-way guy who will likely top out between 35 and 40 points. But that's several years in the future, so dynasty leagues need not roster him yet.
Siemens, 17, was selected 11th overall by the Avs in the 2011 draft. He appeared in all 72 games for the WHL's Saskatoon Blades last season, tallying 43 points (5G, 38A) with a plus-40 rating and 121 penalty minutes. Siemens projects as a top-four NHL defenseman someday, but is likely a couple of seasons away as the Avs have a well-stocked blue line with a couple of more seasoned prospects in Stefan Elliott and Tyson Barrie ahead of him on the depth chart. For now, snap him up in your keeper league and stash him away until he graduates to the big leagues.
