Svechnikov signed a two-year contract with Ak Bars Kazan of the KHL on Friday.
ANALYSIS
Svechnikov did not get a qualifying offer from the Sharks in the offseason and was unable to garner a new contract elsewhere in the NHL, so he will take his talents to the KHL. A first-round pick (19th overall) in the 2015 Draft, Svechnikov had a disappointing NHL career with 20 goals and 25 assists in 172 games, culminating last season with a career-best eight goals in 59 games with the Sharks.

Svechnikov, who is out with a lower-body injury, may be shelved for the remainder of the season, Curtis Pashelka of The San Jose Mercury News reports Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Svechnikov missed the previous four games due to his lower-body problem and now faces the prospect of being out for the final nine contests as well. Prior to getting hurt, the Russian winger was stuck in a nine-game pointless streak during which he recorded just four shots. The 26-year-old Svechnikov will once again miss the 20-point threshold but could challenge for that mark next season.

While he's only 22 years old, Svechnikov is long in the tooth as far as prospects are concerned. The Red Wings, obviously smitten by the Russian winger's size and deft puck-handling ability, nabbed him with the 19th overall pick in the 2015 draft. Unfortunately, a neck issue foiled his bid to crack the Opening Night roster ahead of the 2017-18 campaign, and the Wings decided to keep the power forward off game ice entirely after he tore the ACL in his right knee ahead of last season. Svechnikov is known for his competitiveness and rigid work ethic, which lends hope that he'll come back stronger than ever. A pivotal member of the AHL Griffins' Calder Cup-winning team in 2017, he's registered 74 points (27 goals, 47 assists) over 131 AHL contests, but now must beat out the likes of Filip Zadina and Michael Rasmussen to advance his NHL career.
Known for his explosive scoring drive, Svechnikov has the tools to be successful in both the NHL and fantasy hockey arena this season. Detroit chose the Russian phenom in the first round (19th overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and he's since appeared in 16 games at the highest level, collecting two goals and a pair of helpers. The 21-year-old with the Halloween birthday spent most of the last two seasons spooking AHL goalies to the tune of 33 goals and 54 assists over 155 contests between the regular season and Calder Cup playoffs. Flanking the right side, he won a championship with the AHL's Griffins in 2017 and is now entering the entering the "prove it" stage of a three-year, entry-level contract. Various scouts expect the 6-foot-3, 213-pound power winger to eventually settle into a top-six role with a franchise that tends to promote from within, but he must overcome a late preseason injury that saw him go on the non-roster IR at the outset of the 2018-19 campaign.
The 19th overall pick from the 2015 draft, Svechnikov burst onto the scene by securing a game-winning shootout goal on home ice upon his NHL debut for the Red Wings last April. Prior to that highlight, the Russian dazzled scouts with his seamless transition to North American hockey -- he racked up 157 points in 105 career games spanning two seasons with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles of the QMJHL, then subsequently unloaded 20 goals and 31 assists on AHL opponents for a Grand Rapids squad that ended up claiming the 2017 Calder Cup. The 20-year-old winger will compete for a roster spot out of training camp in September, but his minor-league teammate Tyler Bertuzzi is said to be the frontrunner for an NHL job, which may limit Svechnikov’s fantasy value to keeper formats.
