Haapala inked a two-year contract with KHL side Helsinki Jokerit on Friday.
ANALYSIS
After playing overseas on loan from the Panthers, Haapala will remain in Europe rather than return to North America. In his previous stint with Florida, the winger notched one assist in five NHL contests, while also tallying eight points in 20 minor-league appearances. The 25-year-old Finn has likely played his final NHL game, though a strong showing in the KHL could draw some notice.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2018
2017
Haapala had a fairly uneventful first season playing in North America during the 2017-18 campaign. He appeared in 20 games with AHL Springfield, scoring three goals and eight points. The Finnish winger also debuted at the NHL level, tallying an assist in five contests. Although a bit undersized at 5-foot-9, Haapala did lead the Finnish league in scoring during the 2016-17 season with 60 points. He's shown some potential on the offensive end, but doesn't appear ready to make an impact in the NHL just yet. Expect Haapala to spend most of next season in the minors once again.
Haapala was the scoring champion of the Finnish league this past season, netting 60 points in 51 games en route to leading his club, Tappara Tampere, to its second straight league title; he then proceeded to ink a two-year, two-way deal with Florida. An undersized but supremely skilled winger known for his playmaking ability, Haapala faces a tough adjustment in the NHL, where he'll be playing on a smaller ice surface against bigger opponents. After the Panthers decided not to retain four of their top wingers in the offseason, Haapala has a chance to step into a top-six role right away -- maybe even on the first line with Jonathan Huberdeau and fellow countryman Aleksander Barkov. Haapala is an older rookie at 23 years old, so it wouldn't be surprising if he experiences success right away, but he’s also likely to experience some growing pains as he adjusts to a new league and schedule.
