Latest Fantasy Rumors
Won't receiving qualifying offer
COttawa Senators  Minors
June 30, 2022
Gaudette will become an unrestricted free agent as the Senators won't be giving him a qualifying offer, Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun reports Thursday.
ANALYSIS
Gaudete has yet to rediscover the offensive upside that saw him generate 33 points in 59 games back in 2019-20 when he was with Vancouver. In 50 games for Ottawa this year, the 25-year-old Massachusetts native garnered four goals and eight assists while averaging 11:27 of ice time. The center should be capable of landing a new contract somewhere this offseason that would likely see him filling a bottom-six role.

Gaudette's 2019-20 mini-breakout (12 goals, 33 points, 12 power-play points in 59 games) seems like a thing of the past on the heels of a 2020-21 season which saw him post career-low numbers (five goals, 11 points in 40 games) in addition to a late-season trade from Vancouver to Chicago. The Blackhawks will welcome back Jonathan Toews and Kirby Dach on a full-time basis this coming year, in addition to acquiring Tyler Johnson in a deal with Tampa Bay, further pushing Gaudette down the depth chart. There isn't much to like here from a fantasy perspective.
Gaudette took a huge step forward in his second full NHL season, recording 33 points in 59 games. The Canucks are blessed with plenty of center depth -- Gaudette typically lines up in a third-line role behind Elias Pettersson and Bo Horvat. It's unlikely he'll keep shooting at 16 percent in 2020-21, but he does have a pass-first element to his game given he only put 75 pucks on net last year. Expect Gaudette to feature on the second power-play unit and perhaps tick closer to 14 minutes per game as the 24-year-old grows into a key middle-six role in 2020-21. He should be able to contribute at a 30-point pace.
Gaudette tallied 12 points in 56 games last season, primarily featuring in a bottom-six role for Vancouver. The 22-year-old figures to stay in the same role for the 2019-20 season and if he stays healthy, Gaudette could wind up with 20-30 points in his sophomore campaign with the Canucks. If he struggles out of the gate, Gaudette could see some time in the minors next season, which would obviously be a big blow to his in-season fantasy value. For that reason, steer clear of Gaudette during draft night, but keep close tabs on the youngster throughout the early part of the season to see if he comes out of the gate out in year two of his professional career.
After winning the Hobey Baker Award as the best collegiate player in 2018, Gaudette didn't look out of place jumping into the NHL right away even though he was held without a point in a five-game audition. The former Northeastern alum scored 30 goals and 60 points in his senior season and the Canucks see him as a potential second-line scoring center down the road, however, the 82-game schedule can be crushing for any rookie and Gaudette may also cede offensive opportunities to veteran Brandon Sutter once the young center emerges from the AHL.
