Yahoo DFS Hockey: Friday Picks

Yahoo DFS Hockey: Friday Picks

This article is part of our Yahoo DFS Hockey series.

Friday's five-game NHL slate begins at 7:00 PM Eastern time. Despite the limited amount of options in action, there's value to be found if you know where to look. Read on to see which players to target and which to avoid.

GOALIE

Cam Talbot, EDM at ARI ($27): Talbot has often disappointed owners this season, but this a good opportunity for the low-cost netminder to make up for some of that disappointment. Only Buffalo averages fewer goals per game than Arizona's 2.26, while Talbot should receive no shortage of support considering the Coyotes' opponents are scoring 3.44 goals per game.

GOALIE TO AVOID

Connor Hellebuyck, WPG at CHI ($34): Chicago's been on a scoring binge lately, potting 4.1 goals per game over the past seven. Hellebuyck's 7-3-5 record and 2.59 GAA on the road suggests he'll struggle to live up to his $34 price in this tough matchup.

CENTER

Pierre-Luc Dubois, CLS vs. VAN ($18): Dubois has two goals and an assist in his past three games, giving him seven goals and 17 points over the past 22 games. That high level of play hasn't gone unnoticed by coach John Tortorella, who's rewarded Dubois with 22:51 of ice time per game in the past four. Another strong performance from Dubois is likely against a Canucks club that's allowing 3.26 goals per game, fifth-most in the league.

CENTER TO AVOID

Lars Eller, WAS at CAR ($15): Only two other centers in this slate priced at $15 or more are averaging fewer than 5.0 fantasy points per game. While the third-line center's lit the lamp in four of his past six games, the larger sample size from the season so far suggests Eller's production should quickly taper off.

WINGS

Vinnie Hinostroza, CHI vs. WPG ($16): Hinostroza has eight points in his past seven games and just played a season-high 17:24 Wednesday against the Wild. His early-season struggles in a much smaller role are keeping Hinostroza's price firm, but he's worth much more than $16 as a member of one of the league's hottest lines alongside Jonathan Toews ($20) and Brandon Saad ($18).

Jonathan Huberdeau, FLA vs. CGY ($21): Huberdeau's tied for the team lead with 11 power-play points, putting him in prime position to abuse Calgary's 22nd-ranked, 79.6 percent penalty kill, especially with the Flames playing the second leg of a back-to-back. The talented scorer has no problem producing in other situations, either, as his 8.2 fantasy points per game are second-most among all wingers priced at $26 or less. This combination of elite production and matchup gives Huberdeau as much upside as any of the eight wingers priced above him.

WINGS TO AVOID

Brock Boeser, VAN at CLS ($23): Boeser's been a terrific scoring presence with 22 goals and 40 points, but getting on the scoresheet against defending Vezina Trophy winner Sergei Bobrovsky will be no easy feat. Meanwhile, Boeser's minus-1 rating is at risk of plummeting on the road against a Columbus club that's 15-7-0 at home.

Patrick Sharp, CHI vs. WPG ($15): Sharp's scored three goals in his past five games, but the 36-year-old winger still has just 13 points and a minus-5 rating through 40 games while averaging a mere 13:26 per contest. There's plenty of similarly-priced fresh blood in Chicago with more upside than Sharp at this stage.

DEFENSEMEN

Oliver Ekman-Larsson, ARI vs. EDM ($10): Ekman-Larsson has tremendous offensive ability for a blueliner at the minimum price. He's scored four power-play goals for Arizona's top unit this season after notching at least eight in each of the previous four campaigns. There won't be a better opportunity to add to that total than this home matchup with an Edmonton penalty kill that ranks dead-last at 71.4 percent.

Jordan Oesterle, CHI vs. WPG ($18): Oesterle's impact over the past seven games has been tremendous, as he's averaged 11.5 fantasy points in over 24:30 of ice time per game while contributing three goals and four assists. That level of production would put him right in line with the best of the best among all skaters, and it's worth investing $18 to see if he can keep things going against a Jets team that's won only 10 of 24 road games.

DEFENSEMEN TO AVOID

Tyler Myers, WIN at CHI ($18): Myers relies primarily on the power play for his offensive production, with 14 of his 19 points coming with the extra man. Chicago's 10th-ranked, 82.3 percent penalty kill is likely to keep the blueliner off the board in such situations.

John Carlson, WAS at CAR ($23): Carlson put up minus-0.1 fantasy point against this foe at home Thursday, and things are unlikely to get better on the road the very next day. Carolina boasts the league's best five-on-five possession numbers, which could spell further trouble for Carlson's minus-2 rating.
