Gallagher tested positive for COVID-19 in July. He was not forced to miss much time as a result; Gallagher was on the taxi squad before the end of July and was officially activated Aug. 2. Playing behind Salvador Perez, Gallagher upped his BA nearly 50 points and increased his walk rate to an even 10%. Gallagher did not have a single barrel by Statcast's definition and his xSLG was just .314, more than 100 points below his actual mark. The improvements look flimsy and Perez will play close to every day as long as he's healthy, but Gallagher is the clear No. 2 behind Perez. The Royals seem to be trying to push to be competitive, although upgrading the second catcher spot probably isn't a priority right now, especially since Gallagher provides strong defense behind the plate.
